O.N.A.K.A.I. AGM

Last month we held the ONAKAI Annual General Meeting, where reports across the organisation reflected positive growth and strong momentum. We heard updates from our President Chris Kelly and Secretary Martin Clynch, as well as our National Coaches, Chief Referee, Inclusion Committee, Women in Sport Committee, and the Guardian Girls Project. The AGM highlighted a clear sense of alignment among members, with a shared commitment to our joint goals and the continued development of ONAKAI. A special moment at the AGM saw President Chris Kelly present the Memorial Award to James Brunton, in honour of his father, Oliver Brunton, and a lifetime dedicated to karate. Oliver’s contribution included many years of distinguished service as Secretary of the EKF & WKF Referee Commission, leaving a lasting legacy within the sport.

Conor O’Sullivan Makes History yet again

Congratulations to Conor O’Sullivan on a fantastic performance in Istanbul. Conor won all three of his pool bouts to top the group before bowing out in the quarter-final, finishing 7th overall — the highest-ever placing by an Irish athlete in the Premier League. Now based in Switzerland, Conor trains hard in his new home, working closely with Elena Quirici as he continues to develop at the highest level of international competition. This success follows another historic achievement, where Conor claimed Silver in Senior Male -67kg Kumite at the WKF Karate 1 Series A in Salzburg. This marked the first-ever senior medal won by an Irish karate athlete at a WKF event. A remarkable run of performances and a proud moment for Irish karate

The Bravehaert Cup

Ireland vs Scotland – A Super Event!! What a fantastic event bringing together fighters from the national squads of Ireland and Scotland. Well done to everyone who stepped onto the tatami for both teams – there were some outstanding fights on the day, with incredible skill, determination, and a great attitude shown by all competitors. A massive thank you goes to all the volunteers, referees, coaches, and the Scottish team. Events like this simply would not be possible without your time, commitment, and support. Special thanks to Tony Kelly, ONAKAI Team Manager, for the huge amount of work he put into organising this event. This event truly showcased the talent and dedication of both squads and highlighted the strong relationship between Ireland and Scotland.

Coaching Teenage Girls

ONAKAI Coaching Teenage Girls Workshops, offer a valuable opportunity to educate, upskill, and support coaches who work with teenage girls. By providing practical knowledge and effective tools to better understand, engage, and motivate this age group, the workshops help address barriers to participation, build confidence, and promote long-term involvement in sport. Through this initiative, ONAKAI aims to enhance the sporting experience of teenage girls across Ireland, ensuring they feel supported, encouraged, and empowered to remain active during these important developmental years. Tuesday 10th March 19:30-21:00 Thursday 12th March 19:30-21:00 This training is free to male and female members +18 and can be booked by emailing wis@onakai.ie
