NGB for Karate in Ireland
We are committed to creating an inclusive, supportive and ambitious environment where women and girls can thrive in karate at every level — from beginner participation to coaching, officiating, leadership and elite competition. Karate offers confidence, resilience, discipline and community, and we believe every female participant should have equal opportunity to develop and succeed.
TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT
Training and development are key to supporting and growing female referees and officials at every stage of their journey in karate. A structured approach helps build confidence, technical knowledge, and decision-making skills, while also encouraging greater participation and visibility in officiating roles. Creating clear pathways and a positive learning environment is essential to ensuring more women are encouraged to get involved, develop their skills, and take on active roles within competitions and governance.
COMPETITION PATHWAY
The competition pathway in karate provides athletes with a clear and progressive structure to develop their skills and gain experience at increasing levels of performance. Athletes typically begin at club level, building confidence and fundamental techniques before progressing to regional and national competitions. Success at national level can lead to selection for international events, including European and World Karate Federation (WKF) competitions.
LEADERSHIP & COACHING
Leadership and coaching are essential to the growth and sustainability of karate. Developing strong leaders within clubs helps create positive, inclusive environments where athletes feel supported and motivated to succeed. Through coaching pathways, individuals can build the skills needed to guide others, share knowledge, and inspire the next generation.
VOLUNTEERING
Volunteering is a vital part of the karate community, helping to support the delivery of events, competitions, and club activities. It provides individuals with the opportunity to give back to the sport while developing valuable skills such as teamwork, communication, and organisation. From assisting at competitions to helping with coaching sessions or administration, volunteers play a key role in ensuring everything runs smoothly.
ROLE MODELS
Role models play a vital role in inspiring the next generation of female athletes. They demonstrate what is possible through dedication, resilience, and passion, helping to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes in sport. Seeing women succeed at all levels—whether as competitors, coaches, or officials—encourages young girls to stay involved, build confidence, and pursue their ambitions both on and off the mat.
INCREASING PARTICIPATION
Growing participation in karate, particularly among women and girls, is essential to creating a strong, inclusive, and sustainable sport. Providing welcoming environments at club level, along with accessible entry points for beginners, helps encourage more people to get involved. Initiatives such as women in sport programmes, school outreach, and beginner-friendly events can break down barriers and make participation more appealing.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
Strength and conditioning plays an important role in improving performance, reducing injury risk, and supporting overall athlete development. A pilot programme was delivered in Dublin and Galway last year, and a current programme is now running in Dublin with a focus on teenage girls, providing a supportive environment to build confidence and physical capability, with plans to expand further.
BUILDING CONFIDENCE
Participation in karate plays a significant role in building confidence, particularly for young athletes. Through regular training and competition, athletes develop self-belief as they see their skills improve and their hard work pay off. Setting goals, overcoming challenges, and performing under pressure all contribute to a stronger sense of confidence both on and off the tatami.
Increasing female participation strengthens our sport by broadening talent, improving representation, and ensuring karate reflects the diversity of our communities. Our aim is to support
